Easiest Waffles – No Buttermilk? No Problem

Recently I came across an interesting gadget called the Nostalgia Waffle Toaster (Amazon affiliate link), a “toaster” that cooks your waffle batter inside a silicone sleeve.

In order to test my new waffle maker, I knew I needed a good waffle recipe, one that would give me deliciously crisp waffles, but wouldn’t be too fussy. (Crispiness in a waffle for me is key — it’s what separates it from just being a square pancake with divots, right?)

But so many waffle and pancake recipes call for buttermilk, and while I agree buttermilk does make for a tasty waffle, I never seem to have any around. And since I didn’t know how the toaster gadget was going to perform, I didn’t want a finicky or complicated recipe — I didn’t want any overnight prep or the need to buy special ingredients. (I’m looking at you, buttermilk!)

So in swoops King Arthur to rescue! Since I’ve had good luck recreating other recipes from them in the past, I decided to adapt their waffle recipe which just calls for milk, eggs, sugar, salt, melted butter, and baking powder. Simple, easy and the best part is that you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry.

Simple Homemade Waffles

A simple and tasty waffle recipe made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Equipment

  • waffle iron

Ingredients
 
 

  • C. whole milk feel free to substitute the milk of your choice
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • C. all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tbsp. butter melted (You can also substitute vegetable oil.)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your waffle iron.
  • In a large bowl whisk together the milk, sugar, salt, egg, and melted butter until well combined.
  • In separate bowl add the flour and baking powder. Use a whisk to combine.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir to form a batter. A few lumps are ok, do not overmix or you will get tough waffles.
  • Pour the batter into your preheated iron and cook until golden.
  • Serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • When the waffles are completely cooled place them in a freezer bag separated with sheets of parchment paper and rewarm in the toaster. Boom! Homemade Eggo waffles.

    Overall I like the consitency, but they lacked a little in taste.
    I tried this today with 1/4 teaspoon salt instead of 1/2. I used the metric indication (by the way, thank you for this :)). The result were 6 waffles, with 2 being a little thinner. They were pleasantly soft (I’m more of a liège waffle fan but these were nice). For my taste they were a little bit too salty and sweet (I would probaly use half the sugar and half of 1/4 teaspoon salt the next time) and they needed some other note so I served them with melted chocolate.

    Hi… Comes out Better Each time around. What I have done is cut down some of the Ingredients to make at least 3 servings so it doesn’t go to waste. Sometimes I add a d melody of 🍒🍓🍑’s on top along with maple syrup😋 Wonderful recipe!
